Dhaka- (UNB) – Bangladesh captain Nafeez Iqbal said his team’s performance was not up to the mark in the Grameen Phone ICC/ACC Under-17 Asia Cup Cricket final against India played Saturday.

In the 10-team Asian youth meet, the boys from test babes Bangladesh finished runners-up after conceding a six-wicket defeat against the under-17 team of test elite India in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here.

“We had a sweet dream for clinching the title, but I was disappointed with my team’s performance,” said Nafeez Iqbal, the upcoming Bangladeshi top order batsman from Chittagong district.

“We couldn’t score a big total to keep India under pressure, our bowling was not up to the mark as the bowlers failed to maintain line and length,” he told UNB.

Nafeez said the first five overs of the Indian innings were the turning point of the match with his team conceding huge runs without hunting any wicket.

But the Sri Lankan coach of Bangladesh Under-17 team Malcolm Perera expressed his satisfaction saying, “It is still a good result for myself and for Bangladesh.”

“Bangladesh’s 225 was not a bad total, it could have increased further if opener Ashraful got proper support from the other end. The team has a good number batsmen and allrounders,” he added.

Soon after winning the Under-17 Asia cup title, India’s proud coach and member of the World Cup winning team Roger Binny said, “I am very happy to win the title in my first assignment.”

“After winning three consecutive group matches, we gained confidence and I simply advised my boys to play positive cricket with their usual skills,” he said.

“To chase the Bangladesh total, we needed some good partnerships and later we got it to win the match.”

Replying to a question, the Indian coach said the difference between test babes Bangladesh and three other test playing countries of Asia is only the experience.

The pitch of the Bangabandhu National Stadium is good for any batsmen and also for the bowlers.

India booked a seat for the final eliminating their traditional rivals Pakistan by 77 runs while Bangladesh smartly reached the final shocking holders Sri Lanka by five wickets in the semi-finals on Thursday.
